LUMBERTON — A member of the Lumbee Tribe has been awarded a 2018 Udall Scholarship in the area of Tribal Public Policy.

Savannah Baber, 21, is a rising senior at Wake Forest University with majors in English and Politics and International Affairs. She is a former Miss Indian North Carolina and recipient of a 2017 Lumbee Tribe scholarship.

Baber is the daughter of Pastor Lewis Baber and Kimberly Baber of Garner. Her mother is a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, as is her uncle Kelvin Jacobs, who currently serves the Office of the Chancellor as assistant general counsel.

Baber served this past fall as a congressional intern with the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and she previously completed an internship with the North Carolina Commission on Indian Affairs. Currently, she is a summer intern at the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, a private family foundation that serves the people of North Carolina.

Baber will attend the annual Udall Scholars Conference in Tucson, Ariz., in August.
