LUMBERTON — Southeastern Health recently welcomed its largest group of new residents ever, with 42 doctors joining several residency programs.
As of Sunday, there are 88 residents in total practicing at Southeastern Health.
“We are very excited that our residency programs are expanding,” said Honor Sanderford, administrative director of Medical Education. “Having just graduated our first class, we are invigorated and motivated to create more milestones with larger classes and more residents building on the foundation that first class laid for Southeastern Health.”
The new residents will complete a four-year, three-year, or one-year residency program, depending on their program. The emergency medicine residency is four years, and family medicine and internal medicine are three-year programs. Residents are also here for a one-year traditional rotating internship.
The new residents come to Lumberton from all over, with some traveling from as far away as Washington state and California. One of the family medicine residents is returning to the hospital after completing her traditional rotating internship here.
Southeastern Health and its affiliates have been a major clinical campus for Campbell University’s Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine since 2015. Southeastern Health celebrated the first graduating class of residents on June 22. Residents are medical school graduates who are selected and invited by hospitals to hone their skills to be independent physicians in a hospital or outpatient office setting. The residents also provide additional care to the community.
