LUMBERTON — An 85-year-old man who was found dead in his home this weekend died from injuries suffered in an assault, according to a preliminary autopsy.

Police Capt. Terry Parker said there was no additional information concerning the death of Rufus Revels, whose body was found at about 2 p.m. Saturday inside his home at 3155 Bakersfield Drive, Lumberton. He was alone when his body was found.

Parker said the information on the cause of death from the state Medical Examiner’s Office was received on Tuesday.

“Investigators are still conducting interviews and are seeking anyone with information,” Parker said in a statement.

He said anyone with helpful information should call police Detectives Evan Whitley or Charles Keenum. They can be reached at the Lumberton Police Department by calling 910-671-3845. Callers can remain anonymous.

Erich Hackney, an investigator with the Robeson County District Attorney’s Office, is assisting with the investigation.
