LUMBERTON — In the Regular Division’s final round at the Robeson County Golf Championship on Sunday, 31-year-old Yarnell Locklear topped his first-round score by six strokes to win the title.
Locklear shot a 68 after posting a 74 in the first round on Saturday. He finished at 2 under and beat second-place finisher Austin Locklear by three strokes.
“I was just trying to stay loose and go get it,” Yarnell Locklear said.
Locklear, a state trooper, said he benefited from an unlikely aspect of his game.
“I’m not a good putter, but I putted pretty good,” he said. “That saved me a lot of shots.”
Locklear estimated that he has been playing in the tournament for six or seven years. He has typically played in the Championship Division, and this was his first appearance in the Regular Division.
Brian Haymore finished in third place at 3 over. Aaron Hunt finished in fourth place at 6 over, and Phillip Wallwork rounded out the top five at 9 over.
Carter wins Ladies Division championship
Pandora Carter, 67, turned in the division’s best outing of the tournament with an 80 in the second round on her way to the Ladies Division title.
Carter’s final score was a 25-over 169, giving her the victory by nine strokes.
“It feels unbelievable,” Carter said. “I felt good. I concentrated more today than I did yesterday.
“The biggest challenge was the sand traps. Yesterday, anyway.”
It was Carter’s first win in 10 years of playing in the tournament.
Lea Hepler finished in second place after carding a combined score of 178. Madison Deese was third at 184, Marty Duvall was fourth at 191 and Kathy Hansen was fifth at 196.
Lonail Locklear wins Senior Division
Lonail Locklear, 59, held off Pete Maynor and Warner Hall to win the Senior Division championship by two strokes.
Locklear carded an 85 on Sunday after posting a 71 in the first round, but his final score of 12 over was enough to win the title.
“I found out where everyone was at and just stuck around,” Locklear said. “I wasn’t hitting it good at the driving range this morning. I didn’t feel good today. I hung in there. On the last couple holes I found out I had a two-shot lead, so I ended up with pars on the last two holes.”
Maynor finished behind Locklear at 14 over, while Hall finished the tournament at 17 over.
Eddie Williams and Larry Lynn Locklear finished one stroke behind Hall.
