Hurricane Florence, what can be said about the storm that hasn’t already been said? The storm disrupted our lives, but Robeson County Public Library is ready to bounce back with a few modifications to our program schedule. We still have our Youngster Yoga, our amazing storytimes, afterschool storytimes, Saturday storytimes, a play coming, and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
Our most immediate program, intended for patrons of all ages, is our Carter Stanley program. The main branch in Lumberton will be hosting this one-man show called “A Life of Sorrow, the Life and Times of Carter Stanley” on Oct.30, at 6 p.m. The program uses a mix of storytelling and music to bring to life the saga of an Appalachian Mountain Music Treasure.
For more storytelling experiences, our storytimes are at multiple times and places to reach as many young people as we can. This year we’ve added three 4 p.m. times to our calendar. We have our wildly popular Lego Club on Wednesdays, an afterschool storytime on Tuesdays, a movie once a month on a Friday, and our new Read-A-Long program once a month, also on a Friday. Our Read-A-Long program will feature Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone until we complete that book. Bring your copy or we have a few to share.
Our play this year is George Washington Carver and we expect it to be standing room only for attendance. Please call Youth Services to reserve your seats if you have 10 or more planning to attend. This play will be presented on March 1 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Our Birds of Prey program was initially scheduled for Oct 5 at our Pembroke branch; however, due to the hurricane, we have postponed this program to Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. in hopes that more of our patrons are better prepared to attend. Our Pembroke branch we will host Hawk Manor Falconry from Lillington. Master Falconer Chip Gentry is an exceptional teacher and trainer of these amazing birds. Yes, they are live and will fly around. It’s a show you will not want to miss.
Let’s get moving. Yoga is the thing for us at the library this season. If your child can walk, we are ready to introduce them to yoga. We’re aiming for those that are just learning to walk to pre-K age. Bring your own mat or towel and get ready to stretch. Good habits begin now and yoga is all about getting to know yourself and learning to be you. This meditative practice is thousands of years old and the benefits are immeasurable. We will make this fun and engaging for the youngsters.
For our middle school age patrons, we will have our annual Science event presented by the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, however, this has also been rescheduled. On Jan. 25 at 10 a.m, the museum will bring us a presentation on fossils and the pre-historic eras. Our middle schools are already reserving seats for this North Carolina curriculum based program, so contact us early if you’re planning on bringing ten or more children and adults.
