LUMBERTON — Five Robeson County volleyball players were named all-conference in volleyball the Sandhills Athletic Conference announced on Monday.
Lumberton sent three players to the list while Purnell Swett had a pair. All five players were seniors.
For the Lady Pirates (12-8), Alexandria Simpson, Rachel O’Neil and Katie Kinlaw were selected, while Purnell Swett’s (5-14) Nyasia Jackson and Khaile Jones were picked to the team.
Simpson had a team-best 136 kills and 89 blocks, while both O’Neil and Kinlaw added more than 80 kills each. Jackson produced 263 digs for the Lady Rams, and Jones added 113 kills and 86 blocks.
Jack Britt won the conference regular season and tournament titles without picking up a loss, and swept the player and coach of the year awards as senior Lexy Cole was the conference’s top player and Leigh Ann Weaver was the Coach of the Year.
St. Pauls clinches No. 2-seed in Three Rivers
WHITEVILLE — Behind a pair of goals from senior Sam Flores, the St. Pauls boys soccer team downed Whiteville 4-2 on the road and finish second in the conference standings to lock in a playoff berth for the program.
The win provides the Bulldogs (15-3, 11-3 TRC) a season sweep of Whiteville. The Bulldogs used a late goal in the first half from Edgar Mendez to jump ahead of the Wolfpack in their final away match of the season.
Flores finished off two early goals in the 2nd half to put the Bulldogs up 3-0 against the Wolfpack. The Whiteville squad continued to battle and scored two late second-half goals to try and mount a comeback, but senior Lalo Velasquez made a weaving run down the right channel and cut back to fire home with his left foot near post and beat the Whiteville goalkeeper to make it 4-2 in regulation.
The Bulldogs have now reached the program’s best record and now look set to host a home playoff match in the first round of the state playoffs on Nov. 3. The NCHSAA seeding process will be decided on Wednesday.
Red Springs tops West Columbus
RED SPRINGS — The Red Springs boys soccer team earned a 6-3 win over West Columbus at home on Monday.
All the Red Devils’ goal scoring came from Javier Villagomez. Gael Rodriguez and Rafael Valencia had two assists each.
