LUMBERTON — The Board of Education for the Public Schools of Robeson County accepted the resignation of South Robeson football coach Clay Jernigan at its meeting on Tuesday.
Jernigan had the longest tenure at the same school of any coach in Robeson County, having taken over in Rowland in April 2014.
In Jernigan’s five seasons at South Robeson, the Mustangs went 11-48 with four straight appearances in the NCHSAA 1A state playoffs. This season was the first time South Robeson did not make the playoffs under Jernigan, and snapped a six-year streak for the program.
The Mustangs finished 1-10 in Jernigan’s final year.
In Jernigan’s other coaching stop in Robeson County, he spent two years in Red Springs from 2006 to 2007, and finished 4-18 during those two seasons.
No interim coach has been named at this time.
