LUMBERTON — For the first time since 2014, a football player from a Robeson County 4A school brought home the conference’s top honor as Purnell Swett’s Chandler Braboy was named the Sandhills Athletic Conference Player of the Year over the weekend.
The Shrine Bowl honoree from the Rams was a force in all three phases of the game, and finished his senior year on a high note with more than 1,700 all purpose yards and 16 touchdowns. He’s the first player to win top honors since former Lumberton standout back Josh Sheridan was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year as a senior in 2014.
Joining Brayboy on the all-conference list from Purnell Swett were seniors Rufus Harris and Dylan Lowry. Harris anchored the Rams’ offensive line this past season. For the second straight year, Lowry tallied over 100 tackles as he posted 131 tackles, with three for a loss this season.
Lumberton sent one player to the all-conference team in senior defensive lineman Ed Brock.
Jack Britt’s Erick Martinez was named the conference’s defensive Player of the Year, while Richmond coach Bryan Till was named Coach of the Year.
The Raiders won the conference champion and sent a league-best 17 players to the all-conference team.
