Housing Authority celebrates its stars

LUMBERTON — The Housing Authority of the city of Lumberton recently held its third annual Star Gaze Talent Competition and inaugural Christmas Social at Bill Sapp Recreation Center.

Shane Baker opened the event with a song and the Rev. Paul Matthews served as master of ceremonies. Judging the event were Sgt. Al Collins, of the Lumberton Police Department; Evelyn Cruz, from the Department of Social Services; and Tim Taylor, director of the Department of Parks and Recreation. Nancy Johnson served as the talent auditor.

The competition was divided into three age groups from youth to seniors. First-place winners received $125, second place received $75, third place received $50 and the People’s Choice winner took home $25.

The winners in the ages 9-18 category were Aneliea Thompson, first place; and Keyaishya Davis, second. In the ages 19-56 category, Shellena Hunt came in first place, Jeffrey Thomas placed second, Linda Bethea came in third and Katherine Eastman was fourth. In the ages 57 and up category, Harold Utley took home the first-place price, with Horace Ford and Thomas Hunt placing second and receiving the People’s Choice Award. Rose and Douglas Locklear came in third place.

During the event, refreshments were served and attendees received a visit from Santa.
