As 2018 ends and a new year begins, I want to recognize and congratulate Joy Andrews on being named Robeson County Public Library’s Employee of the Year!
Joy joined the library staff in 2016 as a library assistant. She came to the Robeson County Public Library with many years of experience in the Union County Public Library system. It wasn’t long before she was promoted to the St. Pauls Public Library branch manager.
Since then, Joy has worked diligently to provide top-notch service to her patrons and promote the library in the community. From attending career days, hosting storytimes, lending a hand with technology questions and introducing patrons to their next favorite read, Joy gives her all at the library. This past year she showcased her versatility while the St. Pauls Public Library was renovated. She was always willing to help in whatever way was needed. Her co-workers hold her in high esteem because of how helpful and friendly she is with staff. This is a well-deserved honor for Joy and everyone on staff is very proud that she is part of our team! If you know Joy or visit the St. Pauls Public Library, please congratulate her.
The Robeson County Public Library is celebrating its 50th anniversary! The library system has continuously evolved since the building dedication on Jan. 26, 1969. We invite the community to join in our celebrations.
On Jan. 11 at noon, we are hosting a Lunch & Learn event at the Osterneck Auditorium with guest speaker Bob Fisher, former director of the library. Travel back in time with us as Fisher recounts the history of the public library system. Guests will enjoy a lunch from Panera Bread. Tickets are $15 and may be bought at the Lumberton library.
On Jan. 26 at 11 a.m., there will be a community celebration for the Robeson County Public Library’s 50th anniversary. A few remarks about the history and future of the library will be given to all in attendance. Photographs of past days in the library will be on display. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
To honor the milestone anniversary, we are hosting a Grow a Reader book fundraiser for the Lumberton library. Our goal is to add 500 new children’s books to the collection. We encourage everyone to contribute to this fundraiser in celebration of the building’s birthday. The new books will support early literacy skills for our youngest patrons. Early literacy skills prepare our children for success in reading and school. The average cost to add a children’s book to the collection is $15. Every donation will make a difference. The fundraiser will run until March 31. Donation forms and fundraiser information is available on our website at www.robesoncountylibrary.org. We are preparing to serve our community for the next 50 years and beyond!
As we anticipate the new year, I invite you to spend more time at your local library in 2019. The Robeson County Public Library system has many locations and outreach services to meet your informational needs. For a full listing of locations and hours, please check our website.
A library card is your ticket to access all of the free resources our library has to offer. To sign up, simply bring a valid ID with proof of a local address to any of our libraries. You will be asked to fill out a simple form and within a few minutes, you will have a brand new library card. If you lose your card, replacements are only $1. Parents, please consider signing up your child for their own library card. Children love handing over their own library card to check out a stack of books.
All libraries will be closed on Tuesday in observance of the New Year. Remember that you can read anytime, anywhere with our eBook services through e-Inc and NCKids Digital Library. You may use them on any device in your browser, Overdrive app, or the popular Libby app. Happy new year to all!
