CHAPEL HILL — The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Institute of Politics has announced that Lumberton native Mike McIntyre will be serving as a fellow with the institute for the spring 2019 semester.

McIntyre will lead a series of not-for-credit seminars over an eight-week period beginning in early February, as well as hold weekly office hours. Former Gov. Pat McCrory was also named a fellow alongside McIntyre.

McIntyre, a nine-term congressman for North Carolina’s 7th District, has elected to teach on “Answering the Call Through Public Service and Community Leadership,” and will work to encourage students to become involved in civic service on the campus and in their communities.

Raised in Lumberton, McIntyre graduated from UNC in 1978 as both a Morehead Scholar and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and from UNC Law in 1981. Upon graduation, he practiced law for 15 years before first being elected to Congress.

He and his wife, Dee, who now live near Hillsborough, have two sons, Joshua and Stephen, who graduated from UNC, and are in the legal profession, as are their wives, Sarah and Angelica. His new grandson, Hamilton, was also born in Chapel Hill.

“My desire is to excite, ignite and inspire our future generation of leaders to make a difference right where they are today — as well as where they will be tomorrow,” McIntyre said.

The Institute of Politics’ Fellows Program, now in its fourth semester of operation on campus, works to provide a space for constructive dialogue between students and experienced political practitioners.

“We are excited to be able to provide this forum for discussion between Gov. McCrory, Congressman McIntyre and the students of the IOP,” said Patrick Bradey, director of the Fellows Program. “The weekly sessions that the fellows hold on campus are an invaluable opportunity for students to engage with current actors on the political stage and to dissect issues of importance to the state and University communities.”
