LUMBERTON — The body of a man who had been missing since July 24 has been found.
The body of Shawn Chavis, 42, who lived in Awesome Drive in Rowland, was found Thursday, Sheriff Ken Sealey said Tuesday. He said it was found down an embankment off “Old 74, about a mile down Alma Road.”
The body was sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Raleigh for identification and an autopsy, Sealey said. He was positively identified on Friday.
The cause of death is not yet known, or why Chavis went missing.
“I do not have the circumstances,” Sealey said. “The investigation is still open.”
The sheriff said he planned to meet today with investigators, who have more interviews to conduct.
“I hope to have more information tomorrow,” Sealey said Tuesday.
The search for Chavis was conducted by Sheriff’s Office personnel with the assistance of a state Highway Patrol helicopter. Chavis’ body was seen first by the helicopter crew.
