LUMBERTON — The Fairmont volleyball team opened its season with a four-set win at Lumberton on Tuesday.
The Lady Golden Tornadoes won with scores of 25-21, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-20.
Leading the way for Fairmont at the net was Mya Bellamy with eight kills. MacKenzie Johnson had 15 assists, Emma McMillian had 24 service points and six aces and Kaylee McMillian had 10 digs.
For Lumberton, Alexandria Simpson had eight kills, two aces and three blocks, London Thompson had seven kills and Christina Dickerson had 22 assists and 18 digs.
Purnell Swett soccer opens with win
CERRO GORDO — The Purnell Swett boys soccer team held off a late charge from West Columbus in the second half to win a 3-2 non-conference season opener on the road.
The Rams led 3-0 at halftime before the Vikings tacked on two goals in the second half to trim the lead down. The win ends a 14-match losing skid the program had coming into this season.
In other county soccer action, Richmond topped St. Pauls 4-0 on the road.
