Golf tourney to honor fallen soldier
The second annual Sgt. 1st Class Matthew McClintock Memorial Golf Tournament will be Oct. 20 at Fairmont Golf Club.
This is the second annual tournament. Last year’s inaugural event was at Upland Trace Golf Club and sponsored by the Raeford Kiwanis Club.
The Fairmont Chamber of Commerce takes over headlining sponsorship of the tournament this year.
Proceeds from registration, donations and sponsorships will go to the children of fallen Special Forces soldiers through scholarships set up through the Green Beret Foundation.
McClintock, a soldier assigned to 1st Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, in Buckley, Washington, was killed in Afghanistan on Jan. 5, 2016. A staff sergeant at the time of his death, he was posthumously promoted to sergeant first class and later awarded the Silver Star for his actions in the firefight before his death.
The event will begin with registration and lunch at 10 a.m., and play kicks off with a shotgun start at noon.
Mark Madden — who is planning the event with the assistance of Jim Kester of the Green Beret Foundation, Cliff Newman with the Special Forces Association and Maj. Gen. Kenneth Bowra — said a Special Forces parachute team will jump in and present the colors to McClintock’s parents before the start of the tournament.
The tournament is a four-person captain’s choice format, and prizes will be awarded to the top three finishes in two flights.
Player registration is $65 and includes lunch and dinner.
Multiple levels of sponsorship opportunities are available.
To register or sponsor the event, contact Madden at 910-628-7840, Tony Mackey at 910-628-9931 or Kelly Johnson at 910-770-1967.
