Softball’s Yelton nabs PBC Freshman Of The Week

AUGUSTA, Ga. — A phenomenal week in the circle has paid dividends for UNC Pembroke softball rookie Breezy Yelton as the Harrisburg native was named Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Yelton registered a 3-0 mark and a 0.00 ERA in three appearances for the Braves this week, striking out six and scattering 11 hits across 15.0 innings pitched. The freshman began her week by tacking up a pair of victories in a home doubleheader sweep of Limestone, including a complete game shutout in the second half of the twinbill. Yelton picked up the win in the opener with one hitless inning of relief.

She continued her mastery into Sunday when she scattered six hits and struck out one in a complete game shutout at Newberry. Yelton did not allow an extra-base hit in the win over the Wolves, and faced four or less batters in six of the seven innings she pitched.

Yelton is 4-1 with a 2.01 ERA and three shutouts in six appearances for the Black & Gold this season. She has struck out 11 and walked just four batters in 24-1/3 innings of work.

The Braves (6-6) will resume their 2018 regular season schedule on Wednesday when they head to Wingate (5-7) for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Bulldogs.

Cross Country trio lauded with academic honors

NEW ORLEANS — The UNC Pembroke cross country team continued a time-honored tradition for itself on Tuesday when Jonathan Martin, Michaela Reynolds and Logan Ward were lauded with all-academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The release marked the ninth-straight year that the Braves have sent at least one representative to the squad, and the 10th time that the Black & Gold has sent multiple runners to the listing. In addition, both the women’s (3.17 GPA) and men’s (3.12) teams were recognized on the all-academic team listing as well.

The individual all-academic honor was awarded to those athletes who have compiled a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 and finished among the top 30 percent of eligible runners at his or her regional championships and/or the top half of the field at the NCAA Championships.
