PEMBROKE — Nearly 300 University of North Carolina at Pembroke students participated last week in several community service projects as part of MLK Week of Service.
As part of the effort to honor slain civil rights activist the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., 20 students collected 34 bags of trash during a roadside cleanup effort along N.C. 711 near the Lumbee Tribe housing complex in Pembroke. Students also spent the week assisting at 11 other sites, including My Refuge soup kitchen in Lumberton and reading to children at Prospect and Peterson Elementary schools.
Students also performed outreaching services at Pembroke Housing Authority, Scotland County Parks and Recreation, Robeson County Church and Community Center, Borderbelt Aids Resources Team Inc., Odum Home, Asbury Home and Growing Change. Students also volunteered on campus at the CARE Resource Center and the University Center.
A total of 289 students performed 956 hours of service. The community service hours — donated at an estimated rate of $24 per hour — have a total impact value of $23,603. The volunteer efforts were organized through the Office of Community and Civic Engagement.
